Who Will Save the Children?

I met a young man in September, 2012 and was very impressed by the conversation I had with him. He told me that both of his parents were on drugs and most of his friends were either on drugs, in jail or dead. After telling me this, he looked directly into my eyes and told me that he did not want to end up like them. This young man shared with me that he had a reading disability and was currently taking a reading class to improve his skills. He said that he wanted to attend college and “be somebody”.
My heart was full so I encouraged him in his endeavors and gave him my information. I told the young man about my career and how I could help him get into college. He was excited and thanked me for listening to his story. I was on cloud nine because I felt I had lifted him and reassured him that he could be whatever he set his mind to be. This young man really made my day!! I was doing what God had called me to do…bring hope and love into the lives of others.
Today, my heart is heavy because I saw the young man three days ago and I would not have known who he was if my friend had not told me it was him. He was totally unrecognizable, dirty, very thin and his hands were scarred. To my dismay, the young man I met four months ago had obviously given up and is now a “crack-head”!
I wanted to cry but instead a knot formed in my chest and I still can’t release it. What happened in four months to make this young man turn into what he said he didn’t want to be? Did he have a support system? Did the system let him down? What or who turned him the other way? Who is responsible for failing this young man? Is it me….could I have done more?
How many more young Black men are experiencing the same disappointment and turn to drugs? Have they also checked out of Life? Just think of all of the talent destroyed by drugs, crime and jail…what a waste!!! How do we save our children?
I shared this story with a close friend and they told me that I should face reality…”You can’t save everybody.” That’s probably true but I am not giving up! Somebody has to care. Somebody has to love. Why not me? Why not you? You and I are where we are in life because somebody cared and loved.
