The daughter of an African American woman and her white master, Ellen looked white and was able to escape slavery by disguising herself as a southern slaveholder. Macon, Georgia to Savannah,Georgia, Charleston, South Carolina to Wilmington, North Carolina, Fredericksburg, Virginia to Washington, D.C. Baltimore, Maryland to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Boston, Massachusetts.
