“Borrowing From Yesterday to Do the Work of Today”...
“Back to the Roots of my Earthly Father…Sowing and Reaping”… …A style of life only a small number of people can call their own. I am the sixth daughter and eleventh child of Edress and Tressie Dawson.
My father was an independent farmer, who, along with my mother raised/reared us up on the farm land that his father gave/willed to his children, located in Greenough, Mitchell County, Georgia.
My parents raised and grew, on our farm, everything we needed to live a wholesome life. I am so proud to be able to share with the readers of this blog why it is necessary that we return to Mother Earth for all of our needs.
May I share my experiences of living on a “Five mule/Work-horse” Farm?… Back to my Roots.
I had five brothers one for each mule/work-horse that my father taught each of my brothers how to plow, some of whom cut their teeth on plow handles. I am offended when I hear people making statements, such as, “working a man like a mule” and “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink…what if he the man isn’t thirsty”…how ignorant can one be.
My brothers were taught about plowing and many other things, too. For instance, poppa taught them how to respect and take care of their animals; plow the fields for planting; when and how to harvest the crops planted; raise and butcher the live stock and poultry for the smoke house. Poppa, also, taught each of his sons, how to lay bricks/stones masonary; and cut hair barbering...never did he refer to them his sons as working like they were mules or a working-horse.
While poppa was teaching my brothers in the fields, momma was busy at home teaching my five sisters and me how to cook, clean the house and sew.
When it came time to plant certain crops by hand…then both, my sisters, brothers and mother would join our father in the fields, for planting and harvesting when the crops had grown. My momma and two of my older sisters were taught how to plow, also. I remember being told how my momma, during her younger child bearing years, would plow pregnant along side of my poppa with her stomach resting on the plow stock that my poppa had padded for her.
Ann Landers said it best, and I quote..."It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings"...unquote. Back to my Roots.
My parents never allowed "the system" to teach us more than what they, as our parents, were willing to teach us. I never knew what it was like to come home and not find both of my parents home/there for me/us. We were raised on our own farm land, where we prayed, played, as was brought up together as a family. I remember, that none of us could eat until momma and her daughters had prepared the meal and poppa was seated at the head of the table with momma at the foot and we the children...all 11 of us sat on each side of the long table.
Now-a-day, families rarely eat together. Our eating meals together gave the family a chance to learn "manners at-the-table" and socialize together as a family. Back to my Roots.
In 2012, after 45 years of working the "enemy's system"...I have returned to my family roots...to farm the land that my earthly parents, Edress and Tressie Dawson left his children in Greenough, Mitchell County, Georgia. A friend and I have already started. As we learn, we will share with our readers, because our objective/goal is to share with others, and we show and tell "How This Can Be Done"...Back to my Roots.
