Marcus Garvey

Man Know Thyself, I am inspired by Marcus Garvey because of his strong desire and ability to help Americans and he wasn't from America.

He did what no African-American has been able to do, in less than ten years. In just ten years following his immigration to the United States as a laborer in 1917, Marcus Garvey rose to lead the largest black organization in history.

The only African-American I know that has come close to being able to help as many people is President Barack Obama.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940) was a Jamaican publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator who was a staunch proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, to which end he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).

He founded the Black Star Line, part of the Back-to-Africa movement, which promoted the return of the African diaspora to their ancestral lands.

Marcus Garvey in his "Man Know Thyself" article said: "For man to know himself is for him to feel that for him there is no human master. For him Nature is his servant, and whatsoever he wills in Nature, that shall be his reward. If he wills to be a pigmy, a serf of a slave, that shall he be. If he wills to be a real man in possession of things common to man, then he shall be his own sovereign.

When man fails to grasp his authority he sinks to the level real lower animals, and whatsoever the real man bids him to do, even as if it were of the lower animals, that much shall he do. If he says "go," He goes. If he says "come," he comes. By this command he performs the functions of life even as by a similar command the mule, the horse, the cow perform the will of their masters

Where are men of character, purpose, confidence, faith, men who really know themselves? Where are they in 2011?

Create better racial understanding

What happened to Marcus Garvey? He was convicted on charges of "misuse of the United States mail to defraud investors of the Black Star Line, sent to federal prison in Atlanta. In 1927 he was pardoned by President Calvin Coolidge and deported to his home in Jamaica.

Slowly the Marcus Garvey movement declined and fell apart. However, considering his limited resources the Garvey movement was one of the greatest MIRACLES of all time.

Can you imagine being arrested for "using the us mail" to fraud your investors? Can you see through that, in a country that embraced the trans-atlantic slave trade? What did they use the us mail to do? Another act of terrorism

Hence, Black folk are forbidden, so terrorized and traumatized to come together again, whether AFRICA or AMERICA; not against any race, but to embrace our own, with the freedom to invite anyone.
